Frankenstein: The Modern Prometheus, written by English author Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, is one of the earliest works of science fiction. However, since its first publication in 1818, Mary’s original voice has been overshadowed by the edits made by her husband, Percy Shelley. His revisions emphasized more conservative themes, focusing on the dangers of unchecked scientific ambition and the pursuit of an unrealistic utopia. As a result, later versions downplayed Mary's exploration of complex characters, psychological depth, themes of responsibility, social perception, and the portrayal of an empathetic monster.
For this project, I aimed to highlight the value of the 1818 edition. This book removes Percy Shelley's edits and restores Mary's original text. Each quire includes biographies of both Mary and Percy on the cover, creating a timeline that shows how their personal lives shaped the writing of this gothic novel.
